From Keith Haring to Gabriel Massan—Madonna celebrates art stars at London concert

Posted on

The Queen of Pop is back, reminding us of important artists we have lost while tapping into the art stars of tomorrow. Madonna launched her Celebrations tour at the O2 in London on Saturday, rolling out mega hits such as Like a Prayer and Vogue (there was even a “Busby Berkeley-style choreographed orgy”, according to the Telegraph). But for many the highlight was Madge’s rendition of the Live to Tell ballad against a backdrop of those who had died from Aids, with images of 1980s trailblazers Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe and the late photographer Peter Hujar among those honoured. But the Material Girl also looked to the future (naturally), revealing new work on the big screens by Gabriel Massan (until 26 November), the Brazilian digital artist behind a multi-level collaborative game launched earlier this year as part of the Serpentine’s Arts Technologies programme (Madonna really does know what’s in Vogue).
